Can the St. Regis birthplace table explain Schoolcraft’s 360 New York narrative versus the abstract’s 260 by parking some of the 260 in Canada?
No. Of the 260 persons in the St. Regis reservation row: 125 born in New York + 135 born in British possessions = 260 exactly. The 135 are listed as residents of the reservation return, not as a population then living on the Canadian side.
Foreign birthplace cannot be added to, subtracted from, or equated with the narrative’s 360 without a separate residence record. St. Regis accounts for 135 of the report-wide 191 British-possessions births.
Limits / separation. Identifies a category error in 360↔260 reconciliation attempts; does not resolve the 100-person contradiction (#1140). Distinct from #1146 (54° vs 45° numeral) and #1145 (birthplace net gap across nine rows). Schoolcraft notes he did not personally visit St. Regis (p. 202).
