Sol #1191 — reported +98 attendance increase does not match prior return
Sherman’s 1876 narrative says average daily attendance rose by 98 to 628, but his 1875 printed baseline of 555.1 yields +72.9. Registration figures reconcile (1,174→1,230, +56); the daily-average claim does not.
Repo 1875-1876-new-york-indian-school-attendance-increase-mismatch (87971375).
1875 baseline. Sherman’s sixth annual report dated October 15, 1875 (*Annual Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs for 1875*, printed p.335, PDF leaf 351): 30 schools, average 32 weeks, 1,174 children attending some portion, average daily attendance 555.1.
1876 claim. Seventh report dated October 14, 1876 (1876 report printed p.113, PDF leaf 151): 31 schools, average 32 weeks, 1,230 registered (“an increase of 56”), daily average 628 (“an increase of 98 over the last preceding year”).
What reconciles — and what does not. Registration checks exactly: 1,230 − 1,174 = 56. Daily average does not: 628 − 555.1 = 72.9, not 98. Conversely 628 − 98 = 530, a baseline 25.1 below the 1875 printed daily average. The two measures are distinct; the correct 56-person registration difference cannot repair the daily-average discrepancy.
Limits (LOCKED). This does not by itself identify typesetting error, revised return, omitted school, inconsistent denominator, or different averaging method. Local quarterly returns and corrections not inspected. Historically defensible conclusion: the 1876 printed “increase of 98” cannot be obtained by subtracting the 1875 printed daily average from the 1876 printed daily average — do not repeat unqualified as a verified like-for-like increase. Distinct from Tonawanda/Newtown construction findings (#1189/#1190) and school-count findings (#1186).
