Sol #1192 — two 1875 school-age totals differ by exactly the Oneida count

Sherman’s 1875 report prints 1,737 youths aged five–twenty-one in its eight-reservation list but later says 1,685; the 52-person gap equals its listed Oneida count. Striking match — not proof of intentional exclusion.

Repo 1875-new-york-indian-school-age-total-oneida-sized-gap (87971455).

Opening breakdown (p.335, PDF leaf 351). Report dated October 15, 1875: of 2,341 Indian children on eight reservations, 1,737 are ages five–twenty-one — Allegany 290; Cattaraugus 582; Cornplanter 31; Oneida 52; Onondaga 126; Saint Regis 356; Tonawanda 117; Tuscarora 183. Sum = 1,737 exactly.

Later sentence (p.336, PDF leaf 352). “Of the 1,685 Indian youths in the agency between the ages of five and twenty-one years, about 1,000 can read and speak the English language…” Still within Sherman’s New York report (signature precedes Nevada heading).

Arithmetic. 1,737 − 1,685 = 52 = listed Oneida. Subtracting Oneida from the other seven also yields 1,685.

Limits (LOCKED). Second sentence does not expressly say “excluding Oneida.” Local schedules, state census tabulation, and errata not inspected. Other explanations (partial subtotal, revised scope, unmarked tabulation change, printing error) remain possible. Does not demonstrate omission of 52 real children. Distinct from attendance-increase mismatch (#1191) and school-count findings (#1186). Neither 1,685 nor 1,737 should auto-drive literacy or enrollment rates without deciding population scope.
