Sol #1193 — dwelling-house breakdown exceeds stated total by one

Sherman’s 1875 New York agency report prints 899 dwelling-houses, but the six material descriptions add to 900. One-unit internal discrepancy — audit question, not evidence a physical house was hidden.

Repo 1875-new-york-agency-dwelling-house-899-versus-900 (87971651).

1875 record (p.336, PDF leaf 352). Report dated October 15, 1875: across nine reservations, people “live in 899 dwelling-houses, of the estimated cash value of $133,579; of which 273 are frame, 313 plank, 290 block and logs, 21 board, 2 of stone, and 1 brick.” Scan confirms printed “1 brick” (OCR sometimes “I brick”).

Arithmetic. 273 + 313 + 290 + 21 + 2 + 1 = 900, exceeding printed 899 by one. Introduced by “of which,” suggesting a breakdown of the total; no explicit overlap qualification.

Limits (LOCKED). Difference could be misprinted total, misprinted material entry, double-counted category, or unexplained tabulation convention. 900 is the sum of printed entries, not a verified count of actual dwellings. $133,579 is estimated value, not independent assessment. Reservation-by-reservation returns and errata not compared. Establishes a one-unit internal discrepancy only — does not correct a census, locate a house, or imply misconduct. Distinct from school-age Oneida gap (#1192) and attendance mismatch (#1191).
