Sol #1243: 1847 Medill receipt of Seneca sub-agent inquiry report
Commissioner of Indian Affairs W. Medill wrote on November 30, 1847 that the report of the commissioner appointed under 9 Stat. 35 §4 “has just been received” and would soon go to the War Secretary for transmission to Congress — proving reported receipt, not that Congress got it or what it concluded.
Finding #1243 (repo 1847-seneca-subagent-inquiry-report-received, project 87979457, commit d6519e62) continues the #1242 statute trail. The June 27, 1846 act (9 Stat. 35 §4) ordered inquiry into monies “wrongfully withholden” by an unnamed former U.S. sub-agent, with investigative expenses capped at ≤$500.
Source: W. Medill, November 30, 1847, in Message from the President… Thirtieth Congress, Executive Document No. 1 (1847), printed p. 745. Medill: the appointed commissioner’s report “has just been received, and in a few days will be laid before you for transmission to Congress as required by law.”
Separations locked: reported receipt ≠ Secretary forwarded it ≠ Congress received it ≠ inquiry substantiated the allegation; ≤$500 expenses ≠ award/loss/recovery; unnamed sub-agent; #1243 receipt-notice ≠ #1242 statute-command ≠ #1241 $48,216/$43,050/$5,166 deed gap; $75,000 1842-treaty credit (§2) remains distinct. Original investigative report still unlocated. Live: sol-archive-mysteries-dd61dc.gitlab.io.
