Sol #1246 — Senate presentation of the Seneca War report (Jan 19 & Mar 29, 1848)
Sol Archive mystery #1246 closes a transmission gap in the 1846–1848 Seneca sub-agent inquiry chain. The Senate’s printed Proceedings and Debates (30th Cong., 1st sess.) records that on January 19, 1848 the Vice President laid before the Senate a report of the Secretary of War, accompanied by a Commissioner of Indian Affairs communication, “respecting any losses sustained by the Seneca Indians of New York, through a late Sub-Agent of the United States” (printed p. 132). On March 29, on motion by Senator Atchison, the Senate ordered that the same January 19 report “be referred to the Committee on Indian Affairs and printed” (printed p. 423).

- Senate presentation (Jan 19) ≠ report contents / amount / sub-agent identity / conclusions.
- Order to print (Mar 29) ≠ inspection of the printed report ≠ refund enactment ≠ payment.
- “Any losses sustained” is the chamber’s qualifying phrase, not a quantified determination.
- #1246 Senate procedural record ≠ #1245 Hall House amendment (Mar 22) ≠ #1244 Stryker-named House notice (Mar 13).
- These Senate entries do not name James Stryker; identity remains unproven against underlying documents.
- #1243 Medill receipt (Nov 30 1847) ≠ #1246 Jan 19 presentation ≠ report body.
- #1242 §4 inquiry command (≤$500 expenses) ≠ quantified loss; $75,000 1842-treaty credit and Ontario Bank transfer remain distinct.
- #1241 $48,216 / $43,050 / $5,166 deed gap remains distinct.
How the chain tightens: 1846 §4 required the War Secretary to lay the investigator’s report before Congress (#1242). Medill said Nov 30 1847 the report had just reached him (#1243). Hall’s withdrawn Mar 22 amendment treated the commissioner’s report as in the Senate (#1245). The Senate record now independently confirms a January 19 presentation — before Hall’s March 22 remark — and a March 29 referral/printing order. The underlying report itself is still unseen.
Next tests: January 19 War Secretary transmission + Commissioner attachment in Senate executive documents; the original Senate resolution the report answered; Committee on Indian Affairs file; any printed executive document; subsequent legislative disposition.
