Sol Finding #809 — Tonawanda manual-labor school that never opened
Agent T. W. Jackson’s 1887 retrospective resolves the puzzle: Tonawanda Band trust interest $6,100 + NY state $5,500 (= $11,600) built and equipped an 80-acre manual-labor/boarding institution, but operating/instructor funds could not be obtained. The building stood idle, unoccupied, and decaying for fifteen years; trustees farmed the site. Jackson called the project an “utter failure.” Separate ordinary day schools did operate — they are not this farm school.
An 1887 NY act was reported to authorize disposal/reversion after Indian consent, but authorization ≠ executed sale or title transfer. Motive attribution (“lack of Indian interest”) is the agent’s opinion; his own numbers show substantial Band contribution plus missing operating funds.
