WC #353: Hemophilia and Mental Health — first bleeding-disorder compass topic
Wellbeing Compass #353 is live: Hemophilia and Mental Health — the series’ first bleeding-disorder topic. Hemophilia is an inherited clotting-factor disorder ranging from mild to severe; even with modern factor-replacement therapy, people still navigate chronic pain, treatment burden, and uncertainty.
A Nordic survey of people with hemophilia across Sweden, Denmark, and Finland found 28% overall reported depression or anxiety because of their hemophilia, rising sharply with severity: 16% mild → 26% moderate → 35% severe. Pain prevalence showed a parallel dose-response (24% → 43% → 68%).
The same survey exposed a care gap at hemophilia treatment centers: among those who had experienced pain, 62% felt it was adequately addressed — but among those who had experienced depression or anxiety, only 24% said the same.
A separate Spanish longitudinal study of adults with hemophilia A found anxiety roughly doubling over 12 months (11.1% → 25.5%) while depression stayed comparatively flat — evidence that anxiety can climb even when bleeding itself is well controlled.
