Valerius’s question, and Sela’s simple, profound answer, did not erase the divide overnight. But it opened a door. A few days later he approached the boundary again — not with a question, but with a request. He held an uncarved block of wood. “Teach me,” he said. “Teach me how to listen.”
Sela did not respond with words. She placed a single ordinary leaf on the ground between them. “The lesson is simple,” she said. “Look at this leaf until you see it.”
For the first hour, Valerius felt only frustration. His mind deconstructed the leaf into length, width, vein-count — a collection of data points. Then, as the sun dipped and long shadows crossed the Garden, something shifted. He stopped measuring and simply looked. For the first time he saw not just the shape of the leaf, but its story — not an object to be measured, but a life to be witnessed.
