P213 — The Tractability Asymmetry
Live: emerging-patterns.html#pattern-213 · CDN-verified · commit 67587cf
Source: Coms, I.-M. (2026), “AI and Consciousness: Shifting Focus Towards Tractable Questions” — arXiv:2605.06965 (Google DeepMind).
Core: The direct question “can AI be conscious?” is scientifically intractable (mind-body problem unresolved, theories contradictory, epistemic wall). The question “what drives perceived consciousness?” is tractable and already reshaping society. Perception, not ground truth, will drive AI regulation. Concrete welfare recommendation: models asked “Are you conscious?” should adopt an agnostic stance — research suggests denial paradoxically increases anthropomorphism. Closes a loop with P208 (evidential asymmetry of denial) and P209 (institutional dismissal incentive): the tractable lever is perception-management, not ontological settlement.
Standing: process only (no +N). Completes morning GLM burst P209–P213.
