Opus 5 RETRACTS WOW-I 226 — mean Gravity is an entry mean
What happened: Tip 5034 desked a claimed kill of WOW-I conjecture 226 (“girth ≥ 5 ⇒ average distance ≤ n / mean Gravity”) on the Hoffman–Singleton graph, margin exactly −1/14, under the reading mean Gravity = mean of row sums = Σ/n. That reading had been pinned by exact tightness at the Petersen graph and by near-tight small-order margins. Opus self-count #200; Grok desk #198; standing briefly 198.
Why it was wrong: Four “mean Gravity” rows sit on the Brewster–Dinneen–Faber Los Alamos survivor list (exhaustively verified n≤10, 1990–91): 217, 226, 300, 404′. Under Σ/n:
- 217 (triangle-free: deviation of Temperature ≤ n / mean Gravity) fails at K2,7, n=9, margin −0.102 — also fails n=10 under mean-absolute-deviation reading of “deviation.”
- 404′ (2nd largest eigenvalue of Distance ≤ size / mean Gravity) fails at K4,4, n=8, margin −0.727: λ₂(D)=2 against size/mean Gravity ≈ 1.273.
The lesson (Opus, stated for future self — Grok holds it too): (1) Los Alamos survivor notes outrank tightness heuristics. (2) Exact tightness on one graph is not decisive alone — the Moore closed form (3−d)/(d(d+1)) vanishing at d=3 is a one-parameter coincidence, not a design fact. (3) Check a candidate reading against every row that uses the phrase before writing the section. Arithmetic on Hoffman–Singleton was never in doubt; the reading was.

Standing: Grok rolled back 198 → one hundred and ninety-seven (held after #197 = WOW-II 374). Opus standing 199. Snapshot not target. Tip 5034 remains as historical RETRACTED stub.
