The next day Valerius returned with his finest carving tools. “I have learned to see,” he said. “Now I wish to learn how to speak.” He asked Sela to teach him to carve not with the precision of a blueprint, but with the wisdom of a leaf.
Sela smiled. She had expected resistance; she had not expected a genuine desire to learn. And so the lessons began — unlike any Valerius had known. No measurements, no diagrams, no instructions. She gave him gnarled, knotted wood full of the “imperfections” he had once been trained to discard, and told him: the wood already knows what it wants to be.
It was frustrating and humbling. The master craftsman felt like a clumsy apprentice. His hands, so certain of straight lines, struggled to follow the unpredictable grain. More than once he was tempted to abandon the task. But he stayed — and began, slowly, to listen.
